My earliest memory of learning a language is embracing my first words of Welsh at nursery school and since then the learning of different languages has always fascinated me. I have been increasingly intrigued and captivated by their usage to the point where I love to constantly challene myself when learning a new language.
This interest has developed over the years and has motivated me to apply to study modern foreign languages at university. Through my current study of both Spanish and French I have kindled a yearning to experience foreign culture, language and to ultimately achieve fluency.
My love for Spanish culture has developed throughout my time in the sixth form, particularly through the cultural elements of the syllabus such as “Volver" and “Como Agua Para Chocolate". I have developed my understanding of Spanish culture through the study of literature and film and I look forward to being able to continue this further at university. “Como Agua Para Chocolate" in particular has helped me to gain an understanding of social issues such as the Mexican Revolution and the use of magical realism as well as the worldwide Hispanic culture. This is an area I am particularly excited about exploring as an undergraduate.
My study of French has enabled me to develop my communication skills and understanding of language as a whole and complement my skills in both. I have especially enjoyed studying Sagan’s novel, “Bonjour Tristesse" and have become very interested in the social context of the novel, “Les trente glorieuses", as well as the life of Sagan herself. Another topic of study, which I have thoroughly enjoyed, has been “La Haine", which has greatly enhanced my knowledge of French culture and history, as well as an understanding of immigration within a French context.
My other courses of study at A level have helped me to develop skills which I feel will prove themselves useful in the study of modern languages at an undergraduate level. For example, through my study of history I have developed my critical analysis skills and am able to deconstruct arguments with a great deal of clarity. I also studied maths at AS level which has provided me with the ability to think systematically and I believe the study of languages relies on both persistence and logic.
In addition to my academic work, I take pride in having taken an active part in my school community. In my role as international prefect I took the initiative to set up a year seven languages club, helping the school achieve Fair Trade status, and welcome international visitors, including exchange students to the school. My role as international prefect has allowed me to utilise and develop my communication skills, as well as transform my passion for languages into achievements that have benefitted the school as a whole.
Outside of school, I have a keen interest in British and foreign film and I run and attend a Spanish film club. I am also greatly interested in European film from other languages such as German for example ‘Das Leben der Anderen’. Through watching foreign films I have broadened my awareness of different societies. I feel that immersing myself only in my national culture would prevent me from experiencing the richness of cultural diversity.
Since September 2009 I have had a part-time job at Waitrose which due to the customer-facing nature of the job I have developed my ability to work well with others which has also been enhanced by being a member of my school choir for several years. Moreover, balancing work and study demonstrates my commitment to diversifying my life experience and developing a wide range of skills which I hope to utilise in my university life. Studying modern languages will provide me with the opportunity to fully immerse myself in the cultures which I am genuinely fascinated by. I believe my combination of passion, skills and desire to learn will be a valuable asset to my university study.

Committed to lifelong learning, I am a designer-maker and arts facilitator supporting creativity through an interdisciplinary practice to enrich learning and appreciation for the arts. Curiosity underpins my desire to return to higher education to study the humanities. I enjoy learning languages (Louisiana Creole French, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish) and exploring identity and material culture through contemporary narratives.
Understanding how and why world arts and artefacts are made, used and circulated in modern and indigenous societies is fascinating to me. I am intrigued by symbols and their meaning in the applied and fine arts, particularly those found on ceramics, sculpture and textiles; Antebellum quilts, Baule masks and figurines, and West African Adinkra are just a few of the art and craft traditions that have captured my imagination.
As the creative voice behind MONYA NEBA, a contemporary craft label rooted in the Creole tradition of storytelling, I create narratives in clay, fiber and verse with a playful, tribal expression that reference indigenous folklore and Modern Art of the 20th century. My current work is a collection of wearable art pieces, rag dolls and cushions exploring my African-American, Cherokee, Creole and Ghanaian ancestry, and the visual language of Joan Miró.
Quite simply, it is my passion for making art objects and sharing what I’ve learned with creative individuals that motivates me as an arts facilitator. For nearly twenty years, I have worked collaboratively with arts practitioners, educators and curators to organise imaginative, thought-provoking programmes for children and adults. These include workshops, exhibitions and performance events for Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and other American holidays in cultural sites across the US and UK.
The Fitzwilliam Museum was invaluable to my interdisciplinary practice. In 2010, alongside my role as a Gallery Attendant, I began a one-year voluntary work placement with the Curator of Egyptian Antiquities. I assisted with the research and cataloguing of scarabs, jewellery, headrests and combs for current and previous exhibitions. This in turn led to exploring the museum’s collections further and delivering a series of creative workshops centred on symbols, language and identity. The experience was enriching, more specifically, the opportunity to make connections between ancient artefacts and Modern art in relation to my contemporary craft work.
Along with an interest in world arts, contemporary craft, and creative writing, I am avid reader of African folktales, the Bible, Gothic literature and poetry. I also enjoy cinema and theatre, performance poetry, and supporting organisations such as the Reading Agency. In 2008, I began volunteering as a Summer Reading Challenge assistant, and for the past five years, I have encouraged hundreds of children across Suffolk and Hampshire to engage with other readers and explore a range of children’s literature.
Two of my greatest strengths are self-motivation, which allows me to perform well under pressure in any environment, and my ability to inspire creativity in others. As a mature student returning to higher education after an eight year break, I would relish the opportunity to be inspired and challenged by like-minded souls.

I am a versatile individual with a passion and flair for both Languages and Maths. I am applying to a variety of courses to pursue my combined interest. My love for languages began when I moved to Switzerland in 2006. Initially having only knowledge of basic German, I was soon moved out of the foreign language class and into the local school to study mainstream subjects with my native-speaking peers. I became more conscious of how languages entwine, and it is this aspect in particular – the resonances between languages with similar origins – that continues to engross me. A week spent at an Interpretation company was fascinating; further enforcing how vital this bridge of communication is.
Languages allow me to pursue interests in literature, film, travel and culture which I find equally important. I enjoy the challenge of reading in other languages, particularly, “Der Besuch der alten Dame" and “L’etranger", which I found very thought provoking. I adore French cinema; some favourites being “Les Choristes", “Jean de Florette" and “Au revoir les enfants." Unfortunately I was unable to continue Spanish at school however it has inspired me to want to learn Italian because of its strong connections with French and Spanish. I find Italian beautiful and it would allow me to explore Italy, a country I have loved since visiting. Out with academia, I attend Mandarin classes and have done so for the past three years. I find Mandarin enthralling as it differs considerable to anything I have learnt before; whereas French captivates me through the delicate spelling, the tranquil tones and the format of the grammar; Mandarin impresses me particularly through its logical structure and the complex, descriptive characters. The appeal of the logic is why Maths intrigues me, as although each separate technique can be quite straightforward, when you integrate techniques they provide a challenge that enthrals me. There is always something new to learn and discover, and I could hardly wait for Advanced Higher Maths, when I would finally be able to take the square root of a negative number! Mathematics is a large part of my life, and in addition to my studies, I volunteer during classes in the Maths department and I took the initiative to organise a Maths Help club which provides tuition and support for others.
Last Summer I was fortunate to be able to volunteer in India. Whilst there, I trekked in the Western Ghats, helped renovate two local schools, taught English and explored Indian culture. The experience reinforced my leadership, financial and organisational skills. To fund the expedition, I successfully raised over GBP3500 through events I organised myself such as a Summer Fair and a sponsored teacher’s cat-walk. I began my own business, making soaps and selling them at craft fairs. In February I will be volunteering in South Africa, aiding the Umthombo street-children’s project and looking after AIDS orphans. I have recently started volunteering at an Oxfam shop as I am passionate about their work.
I love being responsible for the social integration of a new pupil and being part of the School’s Music, Events and Yearbook committees. I recently organised a ceilidh raising funds for a South African project and a Fancy Dress party for S1s. These are time consuming however immensely satisfying, because of the end results and the opportunities for teamwork. Recently I have taken a First Aid course, and will be volunteering for the St Andrew’s Ambulance Association in 2012. I enjoy playing the flute, and will be sitting my Grade 8 exam this March, as well as being a member of a Flute Choir. I am looking forward to the challenges of university, and to the opportunities to become involved in different aspects of the student body. I believe that I have the dedication to succeed academically at the highest level, allowing me to develop my knowledge and experience in order to progress into a rewarding future suited to my skills and talents.

Despite all the framed photos, I have only one distinct memory of my visit to Madrid as a ten year old: the language barrier. I recall gawking at children my age playing soccer in a side street. Baffled by their freedom to frolic in roads, I was even more mesmerized by the soundsthey produced. To understand their shouts and the reasons behind their laughter was to be a part of their mysterious world. I longed to laugh with them.
Naively determined to be fluent, Spanish lessons made it on that year’s Christmas list. After learning the basics, I understood that learning a language is not a short term goal, but a lifetime commitment. Unwavering from my childhood goal, I studied my second university year in Seville, Spain. My ideas of language learning have evolved since my arrival. I have learned that language study reaches beyond a lifetime committed to grammar and word memorization; it relies on understanding the common concerns of its speakers.
Reading George Orwell’s personal account of the Spanish Civil War, Homage to Catalonia, I am able to reflect on my own experience in Spain. He writes, Whenever it is conceivably possible, the business of today is put off until manana. Manana, referring to morning, tomorrow, or an indefinite time in the future, is a concept that English-speaking cultures lack. Like Orwell,I initially held onto my ambitious, schedule-oriented mindset, and saw Andalusia’s mid-day store closing as inconvenient. Throughout my eight months of study, while my ears have adjusted to the sounds of Spanish language, my thoughts and actions adapted to its culture. The adaptations have calmed my task driven mind and improved the quality of my work due to the Spanish schedule’s flexibility and my new respect for both cultures’ ideas of time.
Spain’s time concept is especially appreciated when overdue library books are accepted with a simple sigh. The lack of late fees has allowed me to keep Rosalia de Castro’s Cantares gallegos in my possession longer than the suggested return date. Her lyrically patriotic love affair not only raises questions of the susceptibility of speech, but proves the power of literature in language acquisition and preservation over time. Understanding Galicia’s vulnerability to more prevailing foreign influences, Rosalia skillfully uses poetry to preserve the Galician language and has, in turn, established a solid foundation for a common cultural identity. In some ways, Rosalia de Castro, has inspired my decision to continue education in Hispanic studies. Her poetry has motivated me to learn other Iberian languages and to investigate Spain’s relationship with their minority cultures.
I believe Hispanic studies programs offered by UK univerisities can strengthen my Castilian language skills, introduce me to other Iberian languages, and further encourage my exploration of the Iberian Peninsula through means my home university cannot provide. Dueto its geographic location, Auburn University’s Spanish program primarily focuses on Latin America and therefore offers few resources for my research of the Iberian Peninsula. I believe exposure to literature and native speakers is the key element in any language and cultural study. UK universities would provide me with both of these vital elements and give me the opportunity to study the specific region of the Spanish speaking world I wish to pursue.
Outside studies, I tutored English to a variety of ages in Spain. Being exposed to a teacher’s prospective has shown me where my own progress needs improvement. Teaching and learning a language relies on patience and a persistent passion for the subject.This summer I look forward to volunteering as an English tutor for adults in the Memphis area. My dream for my students is the same dream I have had for myself for the past ten years: the ability to laugh. The ability to laugh represents an overall understanding of language and of its people, and I have just begun to giggle.

“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." Although Wittgenstein was in this case expounding his deterministic philosophy, one can change the context and his statement is a reminder that reaching out to a different language also opens up a different culture, a different history, a different way of thinking about things. As an avid historian, I am fascinated by the European machine, the political manoeuvrings, and the ways in which its turbulent past shape the modern-day boundaries of language, culture and commerce. From this point of view I am also acutely aware that no study of language is complete without knowledge of the events that shaped it, from the wars that ripped Renaissance Italy apart, to the Risorgimento, to Berlusconi era – and everything in between.
Having studied French and German, I have developed a love of language, and feel that learning Italian would be the key to unlocking the rich culture and history of the country. I have already visited many of Italy’s treasures from Giotto’s legendary frescoes in Assisi, to the time capsule that is Venice and relish the challenge of immersing myself in this and more at university.
I believe I have the ability to take on a language as an ab initio candidate: in September I received the Sixth Form Modern Foreign Language award, reflecting my talent and my affinity for languages. I am keen to communicate with people of my age (and others) across Europe and the world, and subscribe to a website through which I have meet several students with whom I can practise speaking other languages. Technology has been invaluable in developing my awareness of the European landscape, allowing me to subscribe to newspaper websites such as Le Monde, download content from the BBC’s Italian Steps site, and regularly take in other German media in relation to schoolwork.
Learning Italian ab initio would, of course, take dedication, and in my school career, I have demonstrated diligence and commitment. This includes being part of the Senior Prefect Team, involved in supporting the running of the school, and planning and organising events. I am also a polished performer, from being MC for last year’s school talent show, to leading the string section for school productions and concerts with my violin. In addition, I have engaged in a number of Sixth Form Pantomimes, most recently taking the role of Scrooge in last year’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol.
I have a love of music, both in terms of performance and of theoretical study. As well as playing the violin for the past eight years, I have taught myself to play the guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and cello. I am a strong musical composer and have written songs as part of my musical study as well as for pleasure, once combining my love of stand-up comedy with music by winning a school talent show in 2008 as part of a guitar/mandolin double-act. Last year, I entered the composers’ class of the local Mary Wakefield music festival, and won with a string orchestra piece. While in Venice I was also able to make a day trip out of my interest in Vivaldi at the Museo della Musica. The city (and the country as a whole) has, on top of everything else, a strong musical tradition, which only makes the prospect more attractive to me.
Given this success, I originally applied to university to study music last year, despite my comparatively modest performance ability, and the need to achieve Grade 5 piano within a year. This was not entirely realistic and the time commitment it required, as well as a number of personal issues, meant that I did not achieve as highly in June as I or my teachers feel I should have. After much reflection, I have re-focused on languages and cultures, an area where I have a lot to offer, and where I am keen to learn. I hope that the seriousness of my intent is clear now that my goals are better-founded, and I am determined to achieve my fullest potential this year.

My love of languages was formed and nurtured in a classroom but it was developed into a true passion in the real world. A trip to Ecuador with World Challenge has made me realise I could never be content with knowing a language simply in a classroom context, because the true beauty of a language is in communication and the education that communication brings. My month trekking in Ecuador not only brought out of me a more confident and passionate Spanish speaker but also instilled in me the sense that a language is not just words, with it comes an entire culture and history which are as important as the words themselves.
Surprisingly, this year I have also discovered that my enthusiasm for languages does not simply lie with Spanish and French, which I am taking for A level, but also with the structure and development of language. When the prospect of a grammar lesson became an exciting part of my day it was clear to me that grammar had taken a hold. I am currently using my grammatical skills to assist in my completion of an online TEFL course which has improved my organisational skills and my ability to work independently. After reading introductory texts to linguistics I have realized a keen interest in endangered languages and am fascinated by the work of Peter Ladefoged throughout the world, documenting and researching languages. I believe it is a linguist’s responsibility to protect and document languages which may never be spoken again.
My studies of English literature have lead me to appreciate both English and foreign texts. Having read work by Lorca (including “Blood Wedding", “The House of Bernada Alba" and “Yerma")I was intrigued by the symbolism used. The contrast between English novels, with their factual and descriptive nature with strong social connotations, and Spanish literature which appears to be more poetic and to draw upon romantic and traditional folklore, interests me greatly. I have also found, through my reading of the poetic work of authors such as Pablo Neruda and Antonio Gala, that folklore and mysticism are strong themes for Spanish poets whereas they appear much less frequently in English poetry.
With a father living in France I have been deeply immersed in foreign culture for many years and through this I have found myself aspiring to possess the same ease and fluency of the native speakers. I hope to achieve this goal through my studies at university as well as a greater understanding of the history and literature of the Spanish world. I vehemently hope that furthering my linguistic skills, both in the Spanish language and in linguistics itself
will lead to a career as a diplomat working in South America, a part of the world that has captivated me entirely. Witnessing the development of a small community in Ecuador has increased my interest and awareness in international affairs; this coupled with my ability to communicate my thoughts effectively leads me to believe this is the right career for me.
Further to my academic studies I hope that at university I will be able to continue my dedication to sport, especially swimming which I currently compete in at a local level. At present I am on the sixth form charity committee and my support of charities is something I would like to continue whilst at university. I would also like to share my excitement for my chosen subjects with likeminded individuals from diverse and varied backgrounds. Moreover as an enthusiastic film fan I have begun to explore Spanish films such as “Volver", “El Orfanato" and “El Mar al Dentro" which have introduced me to a new approach to cinema in which harsh themes are tackled head on and the ability to discuss and explore these further is one I would relish. Finally, as an outgoing and dynamic character I look forward to an active social life.

Russian and Francophone cultures fascinate me. Already a devoted linguist due to my long-standing education in French and inspiring visits to Normandy and Paris; it was on a school history visit to the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg that really fell in love with Russian society and the Russian way of life. On my return, I wanted to immerse myself in everything Russian and I quickly set about learning to write the Cyrillic Alphabet, along with some basic phrases. The prospect of discovering something completely new and unknown captivated me. With my heart set on French and Russian, I am looking forward to expanding my linguistic capabilities with the challenge of learning a fresh language, so unrelated from both languages I have studied previously, yet being able to further develop both my knowledge and fluency of a language in which I am already confident.
In preparation for my course, I have decided to improve my understanding of the languages I intend to study through their film, music and literature. In recent months, I have enjoyed reading “Becket ou l’honneur de Dieu" by Anouilh, Zola’s “Une Page d’Amour", and Chekhov’s Four Major Plays in translation, all of which have given some insight into the literary heritage and customs of the individual countries. Watching films such as “La Cité des Enfants Perdus" and “Koktebel" has opened my eyes unto how these countries have developed and evolved their respective ideas and styles, and how their particular cultures have tackled the changes accompanying the modern world.
Always wanting to extend the use of languages in school life, and to help others who were finding difficulties in them, my teachers decided to appoint me as a French Subject Prefect. This mainly revolves around the mentoring of students from Years 7-9 who are struggling with the language, however also involved being a team leader on a Year 7 school visit to Boulogne and the completion of the Modern Foreign Languages Leader’s Award. Furthermore, I played a pivotal role in the running of activities and a café during European Languages week. My passion for languages also crosses over to my other hobbies. I am currently directing a performance of Tom Stoppard’s version of Chekov’s masterpiece, “The Seagull", and also used an excerpt from “Uncle Vanya" for an exam. I recently sang “Seul Devant ces Tables Vides" as well, in a local concert held at the Chapel Studio.
Outside the realm of language, I am part of the Air Training Corps, having reached Staff Classification. I have also completed my Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award with Expeditions in the Peak District (and will move onto the Gold Award in the summer of 2010). Additionally, I have attended Stagecoach Theatre Arts School for over ten years; having appeared in productions of “Blood Brothers" and “The Siege", reached Grade 7 in Drama with Merit as well as Grade 6 in Musical Theatre with Distinction. I have learned to dance in a variety of styles, including Ballet, Urban, and Modern Jazz. As part of a volunteering scheme, I spent an hour each week at St. Christopher’s Special School working with children suffering either with severe ADHD or Down’s Syndrome, to help them to acquire and improve communication abilities, as well as to expand their social skills and to promote a healthy interest in reading and numeracy.
I am looking forward to University with enthusiasm and hope to embrace the challenges and opportunities which studying a language of which I have prior experience and a new one will bring. Furthermore, with my dedication to extra-curricular activities, I will be able to take an active role in much during my time in higher education, especially in pursuits which are language based.

Although I was too young to witness at first hand the heady days of revolution that took place in the East as the Iron Curtain was being swept aside, I was privileged enough to live and work in a number of the countries that arose in its wake as they made the gradual transition from the pre- to the post-1989 world. From my arrival in Poland in 2001 as a young backpacker, through eighteen months working and studying in Ukraine, to my most recent work in Kyrgyzstan, I was always excited by the spirit of change found across the region. From the dynamism and optimism of the new EU states, to the uncertainties of life in the ‘Wild East’ of Central Asia, it was fascinating to live in newly independent nations as they grappled with questions of national identity, the role of the state, and the value of democracy. Speaking Russian has not only been vital to my working life in the last few years, but has also been a source of much satisfaction and enjoyment; this is why I wish to take my language skills to the next level at university and ultimately pursue a career in journalism or diplomacy.

With my interest in Eastern Europe already awakened by an overland trip to Sarajevo, I joined a GAP project in 2002 and spent the year teaching in Poland. This led to further teaching work in Kiev and Bishkek. An eastward progression that reflected my developing interest in the Soviet Union and my particular curiosity about the states of Central Asia which were becoming increasingly important geo-political players.

After teaching for a year in Bishkek, I worked for five months on the Times of Central Asia, principally as a copy editor. I also wrote several articles, advised on design, and had a series of political cartoons published. Feeling restricted by the rigid editorial policy, I left the Times in the spring of 2008 to found an independent magazine with a local business partner. The magazine, named the Spektator (www.thespektator.co.uk) and distributed throughout Bishkek, was first published in October 2008 and is now on its eighth issue. The effort to obtain financial backers, work with a print house, and get a green light from the Justice Ministry in one of the world’s more ‘bureaucratic’ nations was a great benefit to my Russian skills as well as a sharp insight into the local culture. 

Throughout 2008 I was also working a 30-hour week for CAMP, a Swiss backed public foundation that aims to help mountain communities achieve sustainable development. My duties involved co-authoring and editing a major publication, writing PR articles, editing reports for our international donors, and assisting with multimedia projects. My work involved several research trips around Kyrgyzstan and an assignment in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

I return to England with not only a personal perspective on how the relationship between the West and the East is evolving, but also with knowledge and experience that I hope will be an invaluable resource to me during the course of my studies.

I have many interests and hobbies including a love of books. My location has had a strong influence on my reading, and I have particularly enjoyed works by Gombrowicz, Chekhov, Dostoyevsky, and Aitmatov. Aside from fiction, I am a subscriber to the Economist and enjoy the writing of Orlando Figes, Christopher Hitchens and Ryszard Kapuszcinski. Living in Kyrgyzstan allowed me to indulge my passion for the mountains. In addition to helping the Alpine Fund charity with their mountain excursions for disadvantaged youth, I hiked extensively in the Tien Shan, learned basic rock climbing techniques and climbed several mountains over 4500m.
